Squinted Beaches
Squinted Beaches is a photographic series derived from images made on the beach at IJmuiden. By standing still and looking longer, several photographs were made from one place and carried further into a softer visual language. Layered colour, filtered light and quiet shifts in focus move the landscape between recognition and abstraction.
A softened gaze
From a distance, the works still retain something of shoreline, horizon and light. Up close, that certainty begins to loosen: colour, blur and optical layering take over. The landscape does not disappear, but it no longer fully resolves, creating a view that feels filtered, softened and partially withheld.
Landscape as atmosphere
Rather than functioning as a literal view, Squinted Beaches brings the atmosphere of a landscape into a room. The works carry a sense of light, weather and distance while remaining quiet and interior-minded. As individual pieces or in dialogue with one another, they introduce a softened spatial presence rather than a fixed scene.
